Professor James Bainbridge is chair of retinal studies at University College London's Institute of Ophthalmology and consultant surgeon at London's Moorfields Eye Hospital. He specialises in research that aims to reduce the prevalence of blindness using new molecular and cellular therapies. In 2007, he performed the world's first gene therapy for inherited blindness, followed by Europe's first stem cell transplantation for macular degeneration.
